Rostrevor 2014

Date: Sunday 9 March 2014
Event: Ulster XC Series Round 1

Venue: Kilbroney Park, Rostrevor
Host club: Dromara Cycling Club

Dromara Cycling Club is proud to be involved in the 2014 Rostrevor Mountain Bike Festival which takes place on the 8th & 9th March.  This is the second year for this festival where Dromara CC team up with ChainReaction Cycles club to put on a weekend of off-road cycling.  The caravan park in Kilbroney will be used as the event headquarters for both the cross-country race start/finish and the downhill race finish.  Saturday 8th March will be a practice day for both disciplines with racing taking place on the Sunday.   The park will have various food stands to add to the festival fee.  The club wishes to thank Newry and Mourne council and Mourne Heritage for facilitating this event.

Car parking
Riders are asked to park in the MTB car park on the left hand side on the way into Kilbroney and to avoid the café car park.  This will be a busy weekend and we would appreciate co-operation in trying to get everyone in.

Course Description:
Kilbroney Park in the foothills of the Mourne Mountains and backing onto Carlingford Lough is a stunning location all year round.  The senior course will take in two of the fire road climbs as well as sections of the official trails in the park.  The course will be similar to the one used for the World Police and Fire Games in 2013 but with extensions added to make the course closer to a 20 minute loop for the Senior 1 riders.  The riders will start from the caravan park and head up the tarmac road and then onto the gravel fire road climb (first lap only).  Once up this climb the riders will take left into the horse trail which will include the “green rock” section just before the water crossing.  The riders then descent down towards the tarmac road before climbing back up the switch backs up the ascent before a short drop down to the tarmac road.  After a short section on the official trails the riders will climb the second fire road.  The official trails are on the left again and the riders will have fun descending this section until they are pulled off at the old downhill track.  This will lead down to a crossing of the tarmac road and then along the boundary wall.  It is along this section that many of the new parts of the course have been added in.  This section then brings the riders out to the Touring of the Trees parking area for a quick spin through the trees before heading back to the caravan park again for lap 2.  From lap 2 onwards the riders will have an additional section to take in to break up the first fire road climb.  As the course is on the side of a mountain you can expect plenty of climbing!!

The youth races for the Under 6s, 8s and 10s will be centred around the Touring of the Trees site.  The Under 12s course has been extended to take in more of the forest.  The Under 14s course avoids the big climbs and takes in more of the natural trails.

Gridding:
As this is round 1 there will be no specific gridding of riders BUT those who have pre-registered will be placed ahead of those who have not.

Facilities on site:
The toilet and shower block will be available for use.  The main café will also be open.
The park also has a children’s play area to entertain the younger ones.
