Round 5 2012 – Report

Date: Sunday 12 August 2012
Event: Ulster Series Round 5
Location: Garvagh Forest
Host club: Carn Wheelers

Not content with running one round of the Ulster XC series in 2012 Carn Wheelers offered to run a second event in a venue that has not been used for over 10 years, Garvagh Forest.  The venue was described as an ‘old school’ mountain bike course, mostly flat with lots of nice flowing sections of single track, with sections of fire-road for passing slower riders and including lots of nice features including rocks, roots, mud and a few short, sharp technical ‘kickers’.

The club had set up a great mini course for the Under 8s and 10s close to the sign on area beside the fire road climb.  The Under 12s course was longer giving these riders their own unique challenge.  The senior riders had a long half mile fireroad sprint which helped to separate the riders before going into the single track in the forest.  The race had been announced late in the season which meant that the turn out was not as good as other rounds (just over 100) and this was despite a good dry day for racing.

The club wish to thank the Northern Ireland Forestry Service for their willing co-operation in facilitating use of the forest.
